Yet, the hard truth is that misogyny, a deeply ingrained belief system that prioritizes men’s dominance in political leadership, moral authority, and social privilege, remains a pervasive force affecting women globally. From the wealthiest nations to the most oppressed corners of the globe, misogyny shapes the lives, opportunities, and experiences of women in profound and damaging ways.

Across the globe, women face systemic barriers that prevent them from fully realizing their potential. In countries with the highest levels of gender equality, misogyny still lurks in pay gaps, underrepresentation in leadership roles, and the alarming prevalence of gender-based violence. In the United States, for example, women continue to earn less than men for equal work, are less likely to hold political office, and are subjected to policies that limit their reproductive rights.

For women in less developed or more patriarchal societies, the impact of misogyny is often even more severe. In Afghanistan, for example, the Taliban’s return to power has reversed years of progress for women’s rights. Girls are banned from attending school beyond the sixth grade, and women are restricted from working or even traveling without a male escort. In Saudi Arabia, women only recently gained the right to drive, and strict guardianship laws continue to control their lives. Across the globe, from forced child marriages in sub-Saharan Africa to honor killings in the Middle East and domestic violence in Europe and the Americas, women continue to face life-threatening oppression simply because they are women.

The systems that keep misogyny alive are varied and complex. They manifest through political policies, societal norms, and cultural traditions, all designed to preserve male dominance. In some cases, these systems are overt such as legal restrictions on women’s rights or religious practices that demand female subservience. In others, they are more subtle, hidden in cultural norms that devalue women’s contributions or promote unrealistic standards of beauty and behavior.

Take political representation as an example. Women make up roughly half of the global population, yet in most countries, men overwhelmingly dominate political leadership. This lack of representation has real consequences for policies affecting women’s health, education, and safety. When women are absent from decision-making spaces, issues like maternal health, childcare, and domestic violence often take a backseat to traditionally male-centric concerns like defense spending and economic growth.

Beyond politics, misogyny also thrives in cultural and religious traditions that perpetuate harmful stereotypes. Women are often portrayed as caregivers, homemakers, or objects of desire, rather than as leaders, innovators, and change-makers. These narratives limit women’s opportunities and feed into the notion that their primary value lies in their relationship to men, whether as wives, mothers, or daughters.

For many women, misogyny shapes their daily existence, dictating everything from how they dress to how they move through public spaces. In workplaces, women are often judged more harshly than their male counterparts, faced with double standards in performance reviews, and paid less for equal work. In schools, girls are frequently discouraged from pursuing careers in STEM fields, reinforcing the notion that certain subjects or jobs are "for men."

In personal relationships, misogyny often takes the form of coercive control, domestic violence, or the expectation that women should always put their family’s needs above their own. Women who defy these norms by choosing not to marry, not to have children, or by pursuing a high-powered career, are often labeled as selfish, cold, or undesirable.

The mental and emotional toll of living in a misogynistic world is profound. Women are more likely to experience anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem as a result of societal expectations that they should be perfect mothers, perfect partners, perfect employees all while looking effortlessly beautiful and never aging. These unrealistic expectations are not only damaging but also dehumanizing, reducing women to mere objects to be evaluated based on their adherence to patriarchal ideals.

It requires concerted, global efforts to dismantle the systems that uphold it and build new, equitable frameworks in their place. Here’s what needs to happen:

Political Empowerment: Women need equal representation in political leadership. Nations must work toward gender parity in government to ensure that policies reflect the needs and experiences of both women and men. Quotas, mentorship programs, and targeted funding for female candidates can help level the playing field.

Education for All: Access to education is one of the most powerful tools for combating misogyny. By ensuring that all girls receive quality education, including in subjects traditionally dominated by men, like math and science, we can break the cycle of disempowerment that keeps women trapped in low-paying, low-status roles.

Cultural Change: We must challenge the harmful stereotypes and cultural narratives that devalue women’s contributions. Media, entertainment, and advertising play a crucial role in shaping societal attitudes, and we need more positive portrayals of women as leaders, creators, and change-makers.

Economic Equality: Closing the gender pay gap and providing support for women in the workforce is essential. Policies like paid parental leave, affordable childcare, and equal pay for equal work can help women thrive in their careers without being penalized for having families.

Legal Protections: Women need stronger legal protections against gender-based violence, harassment, and discrimination. Governments must enforce laws that protect women’s rights and provide justice for victims of violence and abuse.

Global Solidarity: Misogyny is a global problem, and it requires a global response. Women’s rights activists, international organizations, and governments must work together to share strategies, provide resources, and hold countries accountable for their treatment of women.

We become less innovative, less empathetic, and less capable of creating solutions to shared problems.

Racism is also economically damaging. At its core, sexism is prejudice or discrimination based on a person’s sex or gender, and it often targets women. But it’s more than just individual acts of bias or unfair treatment. Sexism reinforces unequal power structures that favor one gender—typically men—while marginalizing others, especially women and non-binary individuals.

How We See Sexism Today

Sexism manifests in many forms, both subtle and overt. It can appear in the workplace, where women are passed over for promotions or paid less than their male counterparts for doing the same work. It can be found in schools, where girls are discouraged from pursuing science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields because of outdated gender stereotypes. And it’s rampant in everyday interactions, from dismissive comments to outright harassment.

Sexism isn’t just about individual attitudes or actions, though. It’s woven into the fabric of many societal institutions and systems. For example, in politics, we often see women held to higher standards than men, scrutinized for their appearance, tone, and behavior in ways their male colleagues are not. In media, women are frequently portrayed through sexist lenses, objectified, or reduced to shallow stereotypes that diminish their complexity as individuals.

These everyday instances of sexism are harmful because they reinforce an unequal power dynamic between men and women. When society systematically favors men and disadvantages women, it sends a message that women are inherently less capable, valuable, or deserving of success. This dynamic limits opportunities, suppresses potential, and fuels a culture where inequality becomes normalized.

The Impact of Sexism:

Sexism doesn’t just hurt women, though its impact on them is profound. Men, too, are trapped by sexist beliefs that limit their ability to express emotions, pursue careers traditionally associated with women, or engage in caregiving roles. In this way, sexism confines all of us to narrow, outdated definitions of gender roles and expectations.

It's crucial to recognize that sexism is not simply about personal dislike or bias against women. It is about power; who holds it, who doesn’t, and how those dynamics are maintained. To dismantle sexism, we must address the unequal power structures that perpetuate it. This means challenging discriminatory laws and practices, supporting gender equity initiatives, and educating future generations about the importance of equality and respect for all genders.

Final Thoughts:

In today’s world, conversations around sexism and gender equality are more important than ever. As more people speak out against the sexism embedded in our institutions and everyday lives, we have the opportunity to make lasting change. But it requires continuous effort. Being aware of sexism, calling it out when we see it, and working to create more inclusive environments for all genders are essential steps in building a more just and equitable society.

Sexism may be deeply rooted, but it’s not unchangeable. By understanding it for what it is, prejudice or discrimination based on sex or gender, reinforcing unequal power structures, we can begin to dismantle it, one action at a time. Let’s make the effort to ensure that all people, regardless of gender, are valued, respected, and treated with the dignity they deserve.

How have you battled sexism in your own life? What started as a powerful concept has, over time, been twisted into a pejorative term by critics. Let’s dive into the true meaning of "woke" and why it matters in today’s fight for social justice.

The History:

The term "woke" originally comes from African American Vernacular English (AAVE) and was used to describe someone who is awake or aware, particularly about issues related to racial injustice. To be "woke" means being aware of and actively attentive to the social injustices that persist, especially racism. In its most authentic sense, being woke means understanding the realities of systemic oppression, paying attention to the struggles of marginalized communities, and taking action to address these wrongs.

How It's Currently Used:

However, as the term gained popularity, especially with the rise of the Black Lives Matter movement and other social justice causes, "wokeness" caught the attention of political commentators. Over time, it has been co-opted, with some using it to describe individuals or movements perceived as being overly politically correct or too focused on progressive causes. In this distorted usage, "woke" has become a label to dismiss or deride efforts toward equity, inclusion, and justice, painting them as unnecessary or even extreme.

This shift in the use of "woke" is significant. When detractors use the term to mock or belittle, they undermine the ongoing fight for justice. By turning "wokeness" into a punchline, they distract from the very real issues at the heart of social movements, whether they concern racial equality, gender rights, LGBTQ+ inclusion, or economic justice.

We cannot let the true meaning of "woke" be lost in the noise of political rhetoric. It is about awareness. It is about staying vigilant to the injustices that continue to affect our world, from police brutality to gender inequality. Those who mock wokeness are often those who are least affected by these issues. But to be woke isn’t about performative outrage or virtue signaling. It’s about understanding the world we live in and striving to make it better for everyone, especially those who have been silenced or ignored for too long.

Final Thoughts:

The next time someone uses "woke" as an insult, remember its roots. Being woke means being conscious of injustice, and that is something to embrace, not ridicule. We need more wokeness in this world, not less, if we are going to confront and overcome the systemic issues that continue to hold so many people back.

There are a few key reasons for this:

1. Cold War Legacy

The fear of socialism in the U.S. is deeply rooted in its Cold War history. During this period, socialism and communism were often conflated and seen as direct threats to American capitalism and democratic freedoms. Countries like the Soviet Union and China were held up as examples of oppressive, authoritarian regimes that had adopted socialist and communist principles. This historical association with totalitarianism still shapes how many Americans view socialism today.

2. Perception of Government Control

A major critique of socialism is its emphasis on government control over the economy. Many Americans believe that socialism requires giving too much power to the government, infringing on individual liberties, and reducing personal freedom. Critics argue that centralized control over industries like healthcare, education, or energy would lead to inefficiency, corruption, and bureaucratic overreach.

3. Cultural Attachment to Capitalism

America has long prided itself on being the land of opportunity, where hard work and innovation can lead to success. The capitalist free-market system is central to the American Dream, and many believe socialism threatens that ideal by redistributing wealth in ways that may penalize individual success. In the U.S., wealth creation is often seen as a reflection of personal merit, and redistributive policies can be viewed as undermining the incentives that drive economic growth.

4. Misunderstanding of Socialism

Another reason socialism is controversial in the U.S. is that it is often misunderstood. Many people conflate socialism with communism or see it as a radical departure from democratic governance. In reality, socialism comes in many forms, and Democratic Socialism, which combines democratic political systems with more robust social safety nets and public ownership of certain industries, is a model successfully used by several nations around the world.

Many countries in Europe, such as Sweden, Denmark, and Norway, have successfully implemented forms of Democratic Socialism, leading to higher standards of living, robust social services, and strong economies.

1. Universal Healthcare

Countries like Sweden and the United Kingdom have long been admired for their universal healthcare systems, where citizens have access to free or low-cost medical care. These systems are often government-funded, ensuring that no one is denied care based on their ability to pay. While some Americans see government-run healthcare as inefficient, many point to the success of these systems in providing affordable care without the fear of medical bankruptcy.

2. Free Education

In places like Germany and Finland, university education is free or heavily subsidized, allowing students to pursue higher education without accumulating crushing debt. Democratic Socialists argue that this investment in education not only reduces inequality but also drives economic growth by fostering an educated, highly skilled workforce.

3. Social Safety Nets

Countries such as Denmark offer generous unemployment benefits, housing support, and childcare services. These programs are funded through higher taxes, but they provide a safety net that helps reduce poverty and economic insecurity. Critics in the U.S. often point to these high tax rates as a drawback, but proponents argue that the benefits far outweigh the costs.

Some of the key points of controversy include:

1. Economic Feasibility

Opponents argue that the Green New Deal’s ambitious goals come with an enormous price tag, with some estimates running into the trillions of dollars. Skeptics question how such a plan could be financed without dramatically increasing taxes or leading to skyrocketing national debt. Many argue that transitioning the economy in such a radical way could have unintended consequences, such as job losses in traditional energy sectors (like coal and oil).

2. Government Overreach

Another point of contention is the perceived expansion of government required to implement the Green New Deal. Critics worry about the role of federal intervention in the private sector and fear that such a top-down approach could stifle innovation and free-market dynamics. Additionally, some argue that the plan infringes on personal freedoms, as it may lead to lifestyle changes, like altering dietary patterns or energy consumption habits.

3. Political Divides

The Green New Deal has also become a political lightning rod. Supporters, largely from the progressive wing of the Democratic Party, champion it as the only comprehensive solution to avoid climate catastrophe. Meanwhile, conservatives criticize it as an example of unrealistic socialism, claiming that its promises are unattainable and its impacts on American businesses and consumers would be devastating. This polarization makes it difficult for the GND to gain bipartisan support, limiting its potential for legislative success.

4. Misconceptions and Media Narratives

The Green New Deal has been subject to misinterpretation, with some media outlets and politicians framing it as a direct attack on American jobs or as a plot to ban certain industries (such as fossil fuels). However, proponents argue that the initiative would transition these workers into green jobs that are sustainable and well-paying. This clash of narratives often leads to confusion about what the GND truly entails and the ways in which it would be implemented.

For example, white privilege, male privilege, or class privilege refers to societal benefits granted to certain groups simply because of their skin color, gender, or upbringing, giving them unacknowledged advantages in everyday life.

In my own case, I benefit from white privilege. For example, if I get pulled over by a police officer, in most cases I don't have to worry about being assaulted or falsely accused of a crime I didn't commit. While my privilege is less than a white man in the same position, it is greater than that of a person of color (man or woman) who has been pulled over and isn't sure why. This isn't something I exert myself, but something granted to me by the officer who has decided I need to be pulled over. (This is an general example and, of course, not all police officers would assault or falsely accuse someone of a crime they didn't commit due to the person being pulled over being a person of color.)

Recognizing privilege is key to understanding societal imbalances and working toward equity for all. For example, a woman of color may face discrimination not only due to her gender but also her race, making her experience different from that of a white woman or a man of color.

This theoretical approach emphasizes that the struggles individuals face cannot be understood in isolation. Intersectionality calls for a more nuanced view of social justice, urging society to recognize and address the unique challenges that arise from multiple, intersecting identities. By considering the whole person and their layered experiences, we can better advocate for policies and movements that promote true equality for all.

In short, intersectionality is vital for understanding how different forms of oppression overlap and how to build inclusive solutions that address the full complexity of discrimination in society.

Its text states: "The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex." This achievement, however, did not fully extend to women of color.

The U.S. Women’s Suffrage Movement often excluded women of color from their activities and even actively discriminated against them. Many women of color were denied the right to vote for years after its ratification, as discriminatory practices like poll taxes and literacy tests persisted. Full voting rights for all women, particularly Black, Native American, and Latina women, were not secured until later civil rights movements, making the 19th Amendment both a victory and a reminder of the ongoing fight for true equality.

While the amendment was a crucial achievement, it also underscores the intersectionality of the fight for equality, and the work still required to ensure that all voices are heard.
