At its core, sexism is prejudice or discrimination based on a person’s sex or gender, and it often targets women. But it’s more than just individual acts of bias or unfair treatment. Sexism reinforces unequal power structures that favor one gender—typically men—while marginalizing others, especially women and non-binary individuals.

How We See Sexism Today

Sexism manifests in many forms, both subtle and overt. It can appear in the workplace, where women are passed over for promotions or paid less than their male counterparts for doing the same work. It can be found in schools, where girls are discouraged from pursuing science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields because of outdated gender stereotypes. And it’s rampant in everyday interactions, from dismissive comments to outright harassment.

Sexism isn’t just about individual attitudes or actions, though. It’s woven into the fabric of many societal institutions and systems. For example, in politics, we often see women held to higher standards than men, scrutinized for their appearance, tone, and behavior in ways their male colleagues are not. In media, women are frequently portrayed through sexist lenses, objectified, or reduced to shallow stereotypes that diminish their complexity as individuals.

These everyday instances of sexism are harmful because they reinforce an unequal power dynamic between men and women. When society systematically favors men and disadvantages women, it sends a message that women are inherently less capable, valuable, or deserving of success. This dynamic limits opportunities, suppresses potential, and fuels a culture where inequality becomes normalized.

The Impact of Sexism:

Sexism doesn’t just hurt women, though its impact on them is profound. Men, too, are trapped by sexist beliefs that limit their ability to express emotions, pursue careers traditionally associated with women, or engage in caregiving roles. In this way, sexism confines all of us to narrow, outdated definitions of gender roles and expectations.

It's crucial to recognize that sexism is not simply about personal dislike or bias against women. It is about power; who holds it, who doesn’t, and how those dynamics are maintained. To dismantle sexism, we must address the unequal power structures that perpetuate it. This means challenging discriminatory laws and practices, supporting gender equity initiatives, and educating future generations about the importance of equality and respect for all genders.

Final Thoughts:

In today’s world, conversations around sexism and gender equality are more important than ever. As more people speak out against the sexism embedded in our institutions and everyday lives, we have the opportunity to make lasting change. But it requires continuous effort. Being aware of sexism, calling it out when we see it, and working to create more inclusive environments for all genders are essential steps in building a more just and equitable society.

Sexism may be deeply rooted, but it’s not unchangeable. By understanding it for what it is, prejudice or discrimination based on sex or gender, reinforcing unequal power structures, we can begin to dismantle it, one action at a time. Let’s make the effort to ensure that all people, regardless of gender, are valued, respected, and treated with the dignity they deserve.

How have you battled sexism in your own life? Women are a vital part of our military and should be given equipment that fits their bodies properly, just as men have been provided with for decades. My respect for service members, especially women who serve in a historically male-dominated institution, is unwavering. Tucker Carlson, who has never served either, clearly has no respect for the dedication, strength, or intelligence of women in the military. His flippant remarks ignore the very real challenges women face and undermine their contributions to our national defense.

This type of sexist and idiotic behavior from a commentator like Carlson isn’t just offensive; it’s dangerous. Some of the key points of controversy include:

1. Economic Feasibility

Opponents argue that the Green New Deal’s ambitious goals come with an enormous price tag, with some estimates running into the trillions of dollars. Skeptics question how such a plan could be financed without dramatically increasing taxes or leading to skyrocketing national debt. Many argue that transitioning the economy in such a radical way could have unintended consequences, such as job losses in traditional energy sectors (like coal and oil).

2. Government Overreach

Another point of contention is the perceived expansion of government required to implement the Green New Deal. Critics worry about the role of federal intervention in the private sector and fear that such a top-down approach could stifle innovation and free-market dynamics. Additionally, some argue that the plan infringes on personal freedoms, as it may lead to lifestyle changes, like altering dietary patterns or energy consumption habits.

3. Political Divides

The Green New Deal has also become a political lightning rod. Supporters, largely from the progressive wing of the Democratic Party, champion it as the only comprehensive solution to avoid climate catastrophe. Meanwhile, conservatives criticize it as an example of unrealistic socialism, claiming that its promises are unattainable and its impacts on American businesses and consumers would be devastating. This polarization makes it difficult for the GND to gain bipartisan support, limiting its potential for legislative success.

4. Misconceptions and Media Narratives

The Green New Deal has been subject to misinterpretation, with some media outlets and politicians framing it as a direct attack on American jobs or as a plot to ban certain industries (such as fossil fuels). However, proponents argue that the initiative would transition these workers into green jobs that are sustainable and well-paying. This clash of narratives often leads to confusion about what the GND truly entails and the ways in which it would be implemented.

This could be based on characteristics like race, gender, or class. Privilege often goes unearned and unnoticed by those who have it, providing them with advantages over others. For example, white privilege, male privilege, or class privilege refers to societal benefits granted to certain groups simply because of their skin color, gender, or upbringing, giving them unacknowledged advantages in everyday life.

In my own case, I benefit from white privilege. For example, if I get pulled over by a police officer, in most cases I don't have to worry about being assaulted or falsely accused of a crime I didn't commit. While my privilege is less than a white man in the same position, it is greater than that of a person of color (man or woman) who has been pulled over and isn't sure why. This isn't something I exert myself, but something granted to me by the officer who has decided I need to be pulled over. (This is an general example and, of course, not all police officers would assault or falsely accuse someone of a crime they didn't commit due to the person being pulled over being a person of color.)

Recognizing privilege is key to understanding societal imbalances and working toward equity for all. By acknowledging these invisible advantages, individuals and communities can begin to challenge and dismantle the systems that perpetuate inequality.
